Subsequence Landscape

Leela Schauble

June 2 – July 4, 2020

KOTARO NUKAGA, Tennoz

KOTARO NUKAGA is pleased to present Subsequence Landscape, a solo exhibition by Melbourne-based artist Leela Schauble. This will mark her first exhibition with a gallery in Japan, which will feature two of the photographic series, Growing in the Dark and North(Pyramiden), coinciding with a video installation, Signal II.

In 2015, Schauble participated in an artist residency in the Arctic Circle where she witnessed the human impact on natural environment. The journey at the Arctic Circle lead to the creation of North(Pyramiden) (2020), a series of photographs taken in Pyramiden, the abandoned Soviet ghost town where traces of human activities still remains.

The exhibition will also feature two series, Growing in the Dark and Signal II, which reflects her discovery of the science behind the ecosystem during her research in the Amazon rainforest. Growing in the Dark(2020) depicts plants thriving in the face of extreme environmental changes, revealing their adaptation and resilience even in a critical condition. In the video series Signal II (2019), the LED lights positioned in a tropical landscape are sending SOS signals, yet each signal is obscured by the surrounding flashes of lights. The work attempts to create a dialogue between viewers and nature, and the obscuring of signals overlaps with the disconnect human have with nature.
