Takeshi Yasura to participate in 'Seeds and Roots: How to Cultivate a City' at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery

October 01, 2026

Takeshi Yasura will participate in ‘Seeds and Roots: How to Cultivate a City’, a group exhibition at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery from October 17 to December 20, 2026.

In the interstitial spaces of the city, such as roadsides and vacant lots, non-native species, self-sustaining vegetation and organisms that coexist with concrete and plastic form new ecosystems. The exhibition presents ten artists who seek to reconnect with this ever-changing natural environment. Bridging the gallery’s past programmes in contemporary art, architecture and fashion, it brings together works that take everyday human activities such as dwelling, dressing, eating and excreting as a starting point to reconsider nature in an urban setting. Many of the works have been made for the exhibition.

Yasura carries out fixed-point fieldwork in Fukushima and other regions, with an emphasis on direct contact with land and materials. Treating living things, inanimate objects and humans as existing on the same plane, he explores relationships with the many beings, visible and invisible, found in natural environments and urban spaces.
