Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka will participate in 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, ‘In Minor Keys’ by Koyo Kouoh
As part of the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka will present work both inside and outside the Giardini Pavilion in Koyo Kouoh’s ‘In Minor Keys’, running publicly May 9 – November 22.
The 110 invited participants of this exhibition – among them, individual artists, collaborative duos, collectives, and artist-led organizations – hail from many geographies and regions selected by Koyo, the Artistic Director of the Visual Arts Department, with particular attention to resonances, affinities, and possible convergences between practices, even when far apart.
Alexa’s work brings together historical and sustainable craft technologies of her heritage, including hand-papermaking, natural dye, linocut, gyotaku(printing real fish), and washi(Japanese paper). Her work takes the form of sewn paper sculpture, large-scale print installation, collaborative performances, and wearable washi, informed by her travels, namely a decade of community-engaged projects in Nunavut.
Alexa’s recent works study the relationship between climate change and her personal experience with bipolar disorder. As research suggests the condition may have developed during periods shifting between shutdown/hibernation and “manic” productivity during extreme climate variability in the last Ice Age, Alexa is constantly questioning what insights it might offer as we navigate the increasing fluctuations of today’s world.
