August 6 to October 29 2022, KOTARO NUKAGA, Tennoz is pleased to present ‘KOTARO NUKAGA Ensemble #1,’ a summer show featuring works by 7 artists. The exhibition will feature a neon work by Joseph Kosuth, a vanguard of the 1960s conceptual art movement who questioned the nature of art by examining the relationship between words and images, as well as new works by Kisho Mwkaiyama, Nir Hod, Keita Morimoto, and others.
Mwkaiyama’s practice has consistently acknowledged the importance of the primordial existence of light. In this exhibition, he will present eight canvases that have been ordered according to his own set of rules. The work veeda, made of numerous delicately painted layers of gentle hues, links a succession of changing colors to create a gradation that emits a serene glow in the space, bringing focus to color itself as a material. Hod, whose first solo exhibition in Japan is currently being held at KOTARO NUKAGA, Roppongi, will exhibit a large canvas work from his signature series “The Life We Left Behind.” Using materials like chrome, acid, and ammonia to produce chemical reactions on top of an oil-painted surface, Hod’s unique process creates a complex mirror-like finish, faintly reflecting and incorporating the image of the viewer.
Keita Morimoto, who will be exhibiting three new works, uses an eclectic combination of Baroque painting techniques of controlled light and everyday scenes of contemporary society to create his unique style of realism. His compositions seem to capture a moment in time, shining light on a place that is both nowhere and somewhere at once, a “heterotopia” that we can run away to escape from the exhausting life of the city.
Concurrently to this exhibition, we will also be exhibiting works by Joel Mesler, Tony Matelli, and Tomona Matsukawa. As the summer heat reaches its peak, we urge all of our visitors to take care to protect themselves from the weather when coming to visit us. We look forward to seeing you!
