OVERVIEW

Rei Kizumoto(b.1998, Shiga, Japan)graduated with a BA in oil painting from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2021, and in 2023 she received an MA in oil painting from Kyoto University of the Arts.
Kizumoto paints motifs from layers of paint on colored felt, which she then cuts into random pieces. She places many felt pieces on the floor as if she were throwing them on the floor. The felt pieces absorb and reflect light, and have a danger of color that is different from that of paint. The colors and overlapping parts create a complex space. For Kizumoto, felt is a material that is connected to memories of her childhood, when her mother used to make her toys for playing house, and it is an element that evokes “Tactile Memories” embedded deep within her body. The act of applying color on canvas and felt is also a process of pushing time and space into the canvas and felt, and she creates her works while in dialogue with the materials, colors, and herself.
