MATSUYAMA（Tomokazu Matsuyama） is participating in the two-person exhibition ‘Wesselmann x MATSUYAMA’ at Tom Wesselmann’s studio in New York, USA from September 19 – September 27, 2026.

Tom Wesselmann（1931 – 2004）, a pioneer of Pop Art, worked in this New York studio from 1994 until his death in 2004, and the exhibition marks the first time the space has opened to the public. It is also the first time that works by an artist other than Wesselmann have been shown there. The exhibition grew out of MATSUYAMA’s participation in ‘Pop Forever, Tom Wesselmann & …’ at Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, France in 2024.

Wesselmann’s late paintings are placed alongside recent works by MATSUYAMA. At the centre of the presentation is the pairing of Wesselmann’s Still Life #35（1963）, which incorporates an actual Royal Crown Cola billboard, with MATSUYAMA’s We The People（2025）, which repositions the figures of Jacques-Louis David’s The Death of Socrates among the shelves of an American supermarket.

Separated by generation and cultural background, the two artists share an impulse to take up familiar codes of figures, interiors and popular culture and recast them into a bold, visually striking perspective. Wesselmann isolated everyday objects from their ordinary context and raised them to what he called ‘super reality’ through saturated colour, monumental scale and shaped canvases. MATSUYAMA gathers into a single picture plane the contemporary visual environment in which motifs and modes of expression drawn from different cultures and histories coexist in everyday life, giving form to the complexity of contemporary society.
