Teppei Miyake
OVERVIEW
Teppei Miyake(b. 1985, Hyogo, Japan)explores how existence and absence can be made perceptible. His practice follows two main trajectories: one reimagines the tombstone—the most direct social sign of absence—from an artist’s perspective; the other entails on-site excavation of geological strata at locations connected to forgotten historical figures, which he extracts and renders into sculptural forms. Set against the tombstone’s focus on the individual, these excavated works foreground our relationship to fragmented, site-specific narratives: the vast, buried histories that surface only through active human engagement, as well as strands of our own histories that slip into the gaps of time. Miyake received the FACE 2020 Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Museum of Art Award and has participated in artist-in-residence programs across Japan. He has also exhibited internationally, including group exhibitions in Hong Kong and France.
