Marilyn Minter, born 1948, Shreveport, Louisiana, USA

Marilyn Minter utilizes photography and painting to analyze contemporary notions of beauty through the glossy, hyper-realistic visual language of high fashion advertising. The images of dirty jewelry and haute couture accessories on wet, gestural body parts that appear in her artworks lead the viewer on an exploration of the complex, conflicting emotions surrounding beauty and the female body in American culture. Her critical views on the power of desire questions the commodification and consumption of sex and the body in the fashion industry.   Her work is in the collections of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
