Kour Pour
OVERVIEW
Kour Pour (b. 1987, Exeter, UK)is an American artist of British and Iranian descent.
Working restlessly across different artistic processes, media, and cultural references, Pour explores global art histories and the various constructs inherent in their creation. Meticulously hand-painted canvases coincide with enormous carved block prints and architectural, shaped paintings to create an artistic language that dynamically fuses conceptual depth with the rigor of craft. Engaging with visual languages across geographies and periods of time, such as Persian carpets and Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Pour highlights the hybrid and layered narratives of cultural exchange often overlooked in favor of the singular and simple art histories that are canon today. Pour’s exploration of art history is intimately linked with his exploration of identity. He advocates for its understanding not as a static and singular state defined by fixed categories, rather as a complex, fluid, and nuanced idea that evolves over time. Pour’s practice is anchored by a strong connection to his life, and his bodies of work stem from personal moments. Although he was born and raised in England, he was often asked, “where are you from?” That question has become the driving force of Pour’s investigations into the world. In recent year, he takes participation held solo exhibitions in Aga Khan Museum(Toronto / Canada), Gallery 1957(London / UK)and Kavi Gupta Gallery(Chicago / USA). Collected by the Orange County Museum of Art(California / USA).
