OVERVIEW

Umi Kumano (b. 1983, Fukui, Japan) currently based in Kanagawa, graduated Tokyo University of the Arts in 2007 and stayed in Germany as a guest student at Berlin University of the Arts. Perceiving the chaos of society from an everyday perspective, Umi Kumano’s works explore the contradictory nature of our world, where meanings can often be interpreted dualistically. In recent years, the rapid development of technology and unpredictable disasters, which are both occurring at a global scale, have accelerated the unrest of our times as a real event beyond our control. These phenomena create unexpected stories, and form new images of our daily lives with sorrow and gospel. In an age of diversified values of individuals, Kumano’s works reflect the disturbing, inexplicable, and incomplete world in which reality and unreality intersect.
