KOTARO NUKAGA is pleased to exhibit works by the London and Mexico City based artist Stefan Brüggemann (b.1975, Mexico City) for Art Fair Tokyo 2019.
For this show, Brüggemann presents “HEADLINES & LAST LINE IN THE MOVIES,” a large-scale installation that covers walls with a mass of mirrors. On these mirrors, written with spray paint, are a list of headlines taken from the news of the week the works were being produced and quotations from the final dialogue of historically important dramatic movies. By selecting text from both newspapers and the cinema, the artist juxtaposes everyday reality and constructed fiction. Using these texts as maxims that shape and underpin social constructions, the artist confronts the viewer with the work, inviting him to look inside himself.
“BEATS PER MINUTE PAINTINGS” employ machine-cut vinyl letters applied to the painted ground by hand. The canvases range from sober, monochrome renditions to vibrant acid-coloured actions. At times the text dominates the foreground, whilst at others it gives the appearance of being partially buried in the painted field. As in much of Brüggemann’s work, the relationship between language and image is a central concern.
Yet the viewer might not see any text in “NEON OBLITERATION,” the absense of words underscores the loss of language. The series employ differently coloured and continuous neon tubing that is bent and overlapped reproducing taches that the artist has previously scribbled on a piece of paper. ‘Obliteration’ in the title suggests that something beneath is being made invisible or erased.
