Candida Höfer
OVERVIEW
Candida Höfer, born 1944, Eberswalde, Germany
Candida Höfer is known for her large format color photographs of meticulously composed architectural interiors. Höfer composes her shots in great detail, emphasizing symmetry by photographing the center of a room, or along angles that best communicate the interior structure of the space. Focusing her lens on cultural and institutional structures such as libraries, museums, and hotels, she captures the psychological remains left behind in empty public spaces. Höfer has exhibited at leading museums around the world, including the Kunsthalle in Basel and Bern and the Louvre in Paris, and has received international acclaim, having been selected to represent Germany at the Documenta 11 in 2002 and the Venice Biennale in 2003.
